Author, painter, and owner of Rooster Design, Jeri Glatter applied her artist’s eye to the renovation of The House at Rooster Ridge in New Jersey. To create a vintage but updated look to the lighting, Jeri chose barn style fixtures characterized by a fluted look, including goosenecks, pendants, and sconces. In addition, Radial Cast Guard fixtures and a Machine Age Polished Copper Ceiling Fan create a warm glow that highlight the beauty of Rooster Ridge.

Q: What shape was the house in when you started the renovation?
A: The house had previously been renovated in 1984 and this most recent project created only 20 additional square feet. This project was more about upgrading and updating the heating and air conditioning, the roof, appliances, and, of course, the lighting.

Q: What was your overall goal as far as design renovations?
A: The driving force behind all decisions was to pay as much attention to detail as possible. Each area was addressed individually to highlight the space and what it would eventually contain.

Q: What feel were you striving for?
A: We developed a style which incorporated vintage and industrial pieces — the original version of recycling! We captured the charm from antiques and collectibles and yet were able to function in the present by also using new vintage pieces.

Q: Why did you choose lighting from Barn Light Electric for this house?
A: From a style aspect, we find it creates a vintage feeling while still remaining fresh and upscale. As we have a barn at Rooster Ridge, the barn style lighting is a natural; however, bringing it indoors as we did created a conversational impact that we thoroughly enjoy. Guests always comment on the lighting!

Q: What do you like best about your new lights?
A: The appearance which includes the aspect of quality. The lights create a mood and make a huge statement both from a style perspective and quality. The lights are solid looking, command attention, and evoke a warmth and vintage charm as a welcome to our door.

Most people like to choose a getaway place that is far removed from their everyday life. If you live in the city, you might choose a beach vacation. Or if you live close to the shore, you might escape to The Cove at Fairview, a stunning vacation spot nestled in the Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina.

The Dixon family of Fairview, a small community located just outside of Asheville, has built five vacation homes on their 24-acre property, the newest of which is called The Huntley. This impressive structure, complete with three stacked-stone fireplaces, blends beautifully with the natural elements of the surrounding woods. The Dixons wanted this new home to have a modern, updated feel without losing the rustic charm of a mountain cabin. Barn lights from Barn Light Electric were a natural choice for this space.

In the kitchen on the main floor, our All Weather Stem Mount Farm Light with a rust-colored powder coat finish hangs from a shelf over the kitchen sink easily lighting up the task at hand. Visitors to The Huntley will enjoy watching the stars from the hot tub tucked away on a deck near the woods or playing pool under the covered porch by a wood-burning fireplace. Full of modern conveniences and a hint of rustic cabin charm, The Huntley is a hidden gem in the North Carolina mountains.

What would you call a rustic log cabin nestled in the deep woods of eastern Tennessee that is frequented by all sorts of native creatures including snakes, bear, turkey, and deer? Deeradise of course! That was the name chosen by this family when they first purchased their 4-acre lot in early 2011 and started dreaming of building. Finishing touches were completed just in time for the family to ring in the new year in their new home.

In Asheville, North Carolina, the locally owned Blue Water Seafood Company has made a home for itself in a renovated, historic building near downtown that has a distinctive urban feel. Adding to the ambiance are pendant barn lights suspended from the tin ceiling that was restored during the renovation work.

Have you ever heard of RLM Lighting? Probably not, unless you’re a contractor, lighting history buff, or even a long time reader of our blog. For those of you out there that have never heard the term, here is a brief background…

These particular lights were found primarily in agricultural and industrial portions of the country. They utilized a warehouse shade and offered a large spread of light with the durability to last decades. These lights were popular throughout the 1930s and 40s when mass production was in full swing. They’ve recently made a big comeback and it’s likely you’ve noticed similar styles in homes and businesses today.

True to the industrial fashion is the Wire Cage Pendant, shown above on the left. Found in our Discount Warehouse Lighting section, this ceiling lamp is available in classic finishes such as satin nickel and rubbed bronze for a refined look on an otherwise rustic light. Wire cages like these were used on commercial RLM lights to help protect the interior light bulb from debris and getting broken.

Another popular discount barn light is the All Weather Deep Bowl Gooseneck Light, shown above in the center. This fixture is a modern day version of classic, older designs and is very popular in residential areas today. The deep bowl directs light downwards as opposed to a warehouse shade, however, it features a white interior for maximum reflection of light.

Last but not least is the notable Warehouse Pendant Light found on the right. Most storage solutions have evolved over the years through popular stores like Ikea and The Container Store, however, there hasn’t been much regarding the evolution of kitchen storage as many still turn to traditional cabinets, shelving or pantries.

If you’ve got a larger pantry space, tucked behind plain, slatted doors, it’s time to take those doors down. Let’s get creative with your shelving and create a mini buffet area like you see on the right. Leave the upper shelving and use them to store dry goods like flour, sugar or cereals. You can even use the shelving to showcase your collection of serving dishes and platters, as opposed to tucking them away for no one to see. If you’re lucky enough to have a piece of vintage industrial furniture like this chest of drawers, you can use it to store towels, silverware or table cloths. Talk about the potential for organization with all of those drawers!

Now that we’ve got your creative juices flowing, it’s time to think about pendant lighting for this little area. Recessed lighting is too plain and doesn’t evoke much character – but what if you don’t have a junction box in this area either? Our solution? Swagging your pendant light over a hook. It’s a quick and easy fix and doesn’t require the help of an expensive electrician.

Consider a delicate and simple pendant lamp like The Fargo to elegantly light this small space. A few weeks ago, we presented you with a small scale child’s bedroom and gave tips on how to make the most of your small spaces. The bedroom today is relatively similar in size, but still big on imagination. Many of the elements in the room will grow with the child and won’t need changed when Sesame Street and dinosaurs are no longer “cool.”

When designing a child’s bedroom, it’s safe to start with a neutral pallet; this allows for any number of accent colors to be used throughout. The reclaimed barn wood wall is as rough and tough as the little boy who sleeps there, while the bedding and whimsical wall art brings in a variety of bold colors.

As for organization and storage, there is a large wooden trunk at the foot of the bed. These are great for storing anything from toys to schoolbooks and sports equipment; it could even be used as clothing storage later on. The large bed is higher off the ground, allowing for a great deal of storage space underneath. And speaking of, the room’s designer also planned ahead and skipped a traditional toddler bed – going straight for a full size mattress that won’t be outgrown anytime soon.

While limited floor space in a bedroom normally leads to lack of wall space, wall sconces may not be an option for lighting. With that being said, there should be plenty of ceiling space left which is where our ceiling lights come into play. Fitting in perfectly with the room is the rustic pendant centered above the bed. Meet Nick Cavaliere, owner of Beech Design Group in New Jersey! He was kind enough to send us a few of photos of our lights that were installed during one of his recent home improvement projects.

Nick is a licensed landscape architect who also does interior design consulting for clients. When Nick and his wife laid out the remodeling plans for a farmhouse kitchen in their 100 year old home, they chose the Barn Light Benjamin Industrial Pendant complete with Edison Light Bulbs and cloth cords to hang above their granite counter.
