The lighting scheme in a restaurant is important in so many ways. The Juke Joint Diner, a 50s style cafe in Melbourne Australia, closed last year and underwent a major transformation. When the doors reopened, it was the new Laurie Dee’s serving up American burgers and frozen custard. Cobi Marsh of Cobi Retail Design Architects took the lead on the redesign of this cafe and one of her goals was to completely change the look and feel of the place.

“I wanted a raw, rustic, and organic feel with lots of timbers and polished concrete floors,” Cobi says. Gone were the black-and-white square tiles on the floor and the red-and-chrome seats at the counter. Cobi brought in lots of warm wood tones to the counter and to the booths which complement the dark polished concrete of the flooring. To shed some light on the new look, Cobi purchased a myriad of Barn Light Warehouse Pendants, choosing the 16″ galvanized shade to hang throughout the restaurant.

“The industrial look of the barn lights fits the design scope very well,” Cobi notes. The Warehouse Pendant is one of our most popular shades and is definitely an American made classic. It’s design has the same nostalgic appearance as the original pendants created back in the 1930s that hung in factories, warehouses, and over barn doors. What John Stetz of Coventry, Connecticut needed was a big old barn. He had an extra vehicle to store, a lawn mower, and gardening equipment but nowhere to put it all. He also wanted a work shop and a place to just hang out and maybe throw a party. But John didn’t have a big old barn. So he built a big new barn instead. And once the post-and-beam structure was finished, John knew exactly what it needed – barn lights of course!

“I wanted rustic fixtures that looked old and gave it that feel,” John says. “I also really like that 1940-1950 style of porcelain shades.” On the interior of the barn, John chose the black cord hung 16″ Warehouse Pendant in a galvanized finish. These fixtures easily illuminate the generous space inside the building. He also chose to use a half dozen Industrial Bullet Ceiling Fixtures, also in a galvanized finish, to provide light in the smaller spaces with lower ceilings where pendants wouldn’t work well. As he was renovating the historic Charlotte building in Asheville, North Carolina that would house his new Chop Shop Butchery, Josh Wright wanted to find the perfect lighting.

“I wanted to have a rustic look to the lighting with a modern twist to it,” Josh says. “Lighting is so important to a retail business to showcase your products but also to help convey the sense of style you want the interior to show.” On a visit to Asheville’s Lexington Avenue Brewery (another satisfied Barn Light Electric customer!), Josh found his lighting. “I really liked the style of their lighting, and the general manager gave me Barn Light Electric’s information.”

Josh chose the Barn Light Outback Warehouse Pendant for the interior of his new business which is a perfect choice for its location in the charming old building. The new lights complement the exposed ductwork and the details of the black tin ceiling, and beautifully highlight the glass cases full of premium meats from local farms. Outside the front door, an Atomic Cast Guard CGU Sconce welcomes visitors to this independent shop. Additional sconces are also placed underneath the black awnings that line the building’s exterior brick walls which cast a pleasant glow on the sidewalks at night.

“I really like the lights a lot,” Josh says. “I actually took the wire guard off our pendants and painted them the exact color from our logo. That set off the lights tremendously and I really love the pendants.”

Author, painter, and owner of Rooster Design, Jeri Glatter applied her artist’s eye to the renovation of The House at Rooster Ridge in New Jersey. To create a vintage but updated look to the lighting, Jeri chose barn style fixtures characterized by a fluted look, including goosenecks, pendants, and sconces. Q: What shape was the house in when you started the renovation?
A: The house had previously been renovated in 1984 and this most recent project created only 20 additional square feet. This project was more about upgrading and updating the heating and air conditioning, the roof, appliances, and, of course, the lighting.

Q: What was your overall goal as far as design renovations?
A: The driving force behind all decisions was to pay as much attention to detail as possible. Each area was addressed individually to highlight the space and what it would eventually contain.

Q: What feel were you striving for?
A: We developed a style which incorporated vintage and industrial pieces — the original version of recycling! We captured the charm from antiques and collectibles and yet were able to function in the present by also using new vintage pieces.

Q: Why did you choose lighting from Barn Light Electric for this house?
A: From a style aspect, we find it creates a vintage feeling while still remaining fresh and upscale. As we have a barn at Rooster Ridge, the barn style lighting is a natural; however, bringing it indoors as we did created a conversational impact that we thoroughly enjoy. Guests always comment on the lighting!

Q: What do you like best about your new lights?
A: The appearance which includes the aspect of quality. The lights create a mood and make a huge statement both from a style perspective and quality. The lights are solid looking, command attention, and evoke a warmth and vintage charm as a welcome to our door.

Most people like to choose a getaway place that is far removed from their everyday life. If you live in the city, you might choose a beach vacation. Or if you live close to the shore, you might escape to The Cove at Fairview, a stunning vacation spot nestled in the Blue Ridge mountains of western North Carolina.

The Dixon family of Fairview, a small community located just outside of Asheville, has built five vacation homes on their 24-acre property, the newest of which is called The Huntley. This impressive structure, complete with three stacked-stone fireplaces, blends beautifully with the natural elements of the surrounding woods. The Dixons wanted this new home to have a modern, updated feel without losing the rustic charm of a mountain cabin. Barn lights from Barn Light Electric were a natural choice for this space.

The Heirloom Eatery, one of Hong Kong’s newest restaurants opened to rave raviews last fall not only for its multicultural fare but for its eclectic design. The inspiration came from Candace Campos, owner of the design house Candace Collective, who chose tin flower pots, a hodgepodge of vintage furniture, and even a bicycle that rests against the wall in the tiny bathroom. To top off her design, Candace chose barn light pendants to illuminate it all.

“The design direction was whimsical and I thought barn lights would add that type of character,” says Candace. She chose Barn Light Electric’s 16-inch Industrial Warehouse Pendants with the black cotton twist cord to use in both the eating areas and in the bathrooms.
