When we last visited Carrie, author of the blog Hazardous Design, she and her husband were busy pushing their late 1800s-era home into the 21st century one space at a time. That post described the garage makeover which included some fresh paint and one of our All Weather Gooseneck Farm Lights.
Today we return to the home where Carrie has been focusing her latest efforts on the front entryway. As with many renovations in an older home, the first steps included removing dated materials. In Carrie’s case, this meant steaming away a busy vinyl wallpaper and stripping the staircase down to bare wood. With a relatively clean palette, the couple repainted the ceiling and walls, stained the stairs “dark, dark, dark” as Carrie says, and cut picture molding to add interest and texture to walls.

Decorating your home’s recreational space can be one of the most fun projects you’ll ever undertake. It’s got to be better than remodeling the bathroom, right? After all, no matter if you have a den, play room, home theater, or man cave, the end result will be a space where you spend many enjoyable hours doing what you love whether it’s watching the latest action adventure flick, playing five card stud, or destroying your next-door neighbor on Mario Kart Wii.

Small spaces present interesting design challenges yet so many tools are at your disposal for making small rooms look open and inviting. Take this kitchen for example. The homeowner has used color, pattern, scale, and texture to make the most of the space within these walls. The white walls lend an airiness to the room while the open cabinetry is a great choice along the back wall. The pattern on the floor adds visual interest without overcrowding the space, and the black appliances and seating area contrast well with the white tones. And for just a punch of color, we love the modern pendant hanging over the table!
Identified by sleek flared shades and simple cylindrical designs, our collection of Modern Pendants is creatively designed for contemporary tastes. With their clean lines and organic appearance, these modern ceiling lights can be placed above tables, islands, and bars in both commercial and residential settings. Our customizable pendants come with adjustable hanging cords for easy installation. When overhead junction boxes are not centered above your table, consider swagging or draping the cord over a hook.
To get this look, consider our Barn Light Industrial Jasper Pendant, a sleek pendant that comes in three sizes to give your space an updated, avant garde look. The Jasper Pendant can be customized in one of more than 50 colors and can be cord or stem mounted as your space requires. Choose a bold red or cruiser green finish for a retro spin, or try Tuscany or Brushed Aluminum for a thoroughly modern look.
Also check out the Barn Light Arbuckle Pendant which mimics the lines of a traditional barn light but with a sleek, modern style. The open neck design allows light to filter over the top of the wide 18″ shade. Available in dozens of finish colors, plus several glass and mounting options, the Arbuckle is a very affordable way to bring a splash of modern style to your space.

Most companies have a tag line – meaning a slogan or phrase that quickly sums up what they’re about. We’re pretty proud of ours really; it 100%… wait …110% represents what we’re about: Where Vintage & Modern Collide. That’s it; cut straight and to the point! So many of our products online have vintage roots, you just wouldn’t know it. They say history repeats itself, and we’re pretty glad it has in this case.
