When we last visited Carrie, author of the blog Hazardous Design, she and her husband were busy pushing their late 1800s-era home into the 21st century one space at a time. That post described the garage makeover which included some fresh paint and one of our All Weather Gooseneck Farm Lights.
Today we return to the home where Carrie has been focusing her latest efforts on the front entryway. As with many renovations in an older home, the first steps included removing dated materials. In Carrie’s case, this meant steaming away a busy vinyl wallpaper and stripping the staircase down to bare wood. With a relatively clean palette, the couple repainted the ceiling and walls, stained the stairs “dark, dark, dark” as Carrie says, and cut picture molding to add interest and texture to walls.

Daytime soap stars Scott Bailey and his fiance Adrienne Frantz are tired of their local fitness centers and would like to make their garage into an ultimate home gym. With help from Bill Goldberg and the Garage Mahal design team, these two soap stars will get a workout building their new gym, complete with a secret entrance, vaulted ceilings, and space-saving gym equipment.
Scott and Adrienne’s garage was not very big to start with, so once the much anticipated new equipment was added, the design team was left to utilize the wall space. Medicine balls and free weights are hung along the sides, along with a personal water cooler and their very own rock climbing wall. New vaulted ceilings help the room feel larger, but will now require more down lighting. If you have taller ceilings, consider pendants with adjustable cord and stem lengths. Looking at the photo, Scott and Adrienne chose smaller, track lights. Similar styles can be found in our Par Sign Lighting category.

Since modern lighting has been introduced to the market, there have not been great strides taken to advance this style past the typical run of the mill lights that are on display at many home improvement stores. In an effort to break the mold on contemporary lighting, our Modern Sconces feature designs that actually reflect various moments in the modern movement. Borrowing elements from modern architecture, furniture, and painting, these lights truly express themselves as a work of art and not just as a light fixture. Providing such character in an abstract manner is the essence of the modern movement, the breaking of traditional form to create a functional piece of beauty represents the most rudimentary principle of this movement. With the addition of our Modern Sconces we hope to provide a refreshing alternative to the stale options offered on the market.
