I have a longstanding love affair with barns. I grew up in the south where we had a big old barn that was better than any playhouse my parents could have built us. My sisters and I spent countless hours there holding club meetings amongst the hay bales and watching barn swallows tend their nests in the eaves. On a rainy day, there was nothing better than a picnic lunch in the hayloft listening to the rain patter on the tin roof.
It’s no wonder so many people are converting barns to homes these days. With the popularity of reclaiming and recycling everything under the sun, an old barn can find new life as a home for two-legged creatures instead of four-legged... Read More
Tucked away in the picturesque hills of Marin County just north of San Francisco, today’s Featured Customer built a craftsman-style home designed not to stand out from this lovely place, but to assimilate with it peacefully.
“We tried to contour the home to the land and make it blend into the surroundings,” David says. Farm land surrounds the new home and the homeowners incorporated elements of corrugated metal into the structure to “keep it classic” as David says. This includes galvanized gooseneck barn lights and a cord-hung barn pendant on the exterior. Like many California homeowners, David and his wife Allison focused on energy... Read More

Earlier this week, we visited with designer Cheryl Sottile in a post featuring a kitchen renovation in the Florida Keys. Cheryl infused tropical hues into the space with our Ivanhoe® Dino Porcelain Pendant Lights in a creamy Jadite finish. Today, we cross the Sunshine State to visit another one of Cheryl’s project sites, this time in Sarasota where she tackled transforming a former oyster bar into a Mexican restaurant.
“My client asked for high energy, but I also wanted it to feel clean and uncluttered,” Cheryl says. “Many Mexican restaurants are so contrived with sombreros, fountains, and stuff hanging from every corner. We wanted a fun... Read More
