Earlier this week, we visited with designer Cheryl Sottile in a post featuring a kitchen renovation in the Florida Keys. Cheryl infused tropical hues into the space with our Ivanhoe™ Dino Porcelain Pendant Lights in a creamy Jadite finish. Today, we cross the Sunshine State to visit another one of Cheryl’s project sites, this time in Sarasota where she tackled transforming a former oyster bar into a Mexican restaurant.

A serious love of all things vintage drives Meg and Trevor’s home design in Ontario, Canada. As they considered improvements to their main living space, Meg knew the cheesy, big-box-store lights would have to go.
“We wanted to add some interest to the ceiling as it is quite high and we had plain flush mount lights with no real interest,” Meg explains. “We spend most of our time in this room so comfort was a definite feel requirement.” The couple have an eclectic mix of items in their home including a lot of ethnographic African art mixed in with rustic industrial touches.

When homeowners Carrie and Chris purchased their new home in Rhode Island, they had one goal in mind — to make it their own and to have fun in the process.
“We purposely bought the worst house in the best neighborhood with the intention of starting over from scratch,” Carrie says. “Our house is more than 125 years old and we’ve been conscious of its history when making our design decisions.” While the house renovations took priority, Carrie didn’t ignore the details of the detached garage which also needed updating. Although bare-bulb pendants are all the rage in the interior design world, they were quite commonplace back in the early 20th century. It wasn’t until the 1920s that shapely, opaque globes began to cover up those bare bulbs and add sophisticated new styling to schoolhouses, government buildings, and libraries. The name schoolhouse lighting came from the early classroom use of these globes which provided a warm glow of light and protection for the bulb
from flying erasers and other enthusiastic learning!
The schoolhouse pendants in this kitchen, located in a grand 1910-era home in Seattle’s Capitol Hill area, add a nostalgic feel while blending in with more modern touches. The butcher block and stainless steel counters create a sleek feel to the space while the white tiling on the walls and ceiling add texture. The floor is a dark blue, cork and rubber which must give relief to the chef’s knees while standing for hours over the stove.
To get this look, check out our Schoolhouse Pendant, part of our line of Discount Warehouse Lighting. With clean and graceful lines, these pendants are the
perfect touch in this vintage yet modern space. Available in both a 10″ and a 15″ shade, the Schoolhouse Pendant can add a nostalgic touch to the kitchens, dining rooms, and laundry rooms of traditional or historic homes. In your choice of a Rubbed Bronze or Chrome finish, this light starts at under $100 and can quick ship in five business days or less.
