Style Guide: Contemporary Garden Patio

For those who experience Winter at it’s worst, you know how ready you are to see Spring arrive. For five to six months out of the year, you plan on taking in as much sunshine as you can! Although work keeps most of us indoors during the day, how about creating your own relaxing, outdoor retreat for when you get home? Outdoor living spaces are ideal for bringing the family together or entertaining friends on the weekends. Whether you’re looking to redo your covered patio or pool deck, check out this week’s Style Guide for any contemporary, outdoor space.

We started with the big things again – furniture. Crate & Barrel offers a great line of durable, all weather furniture. The nice thing about these is that they look like wicker, but are actually a fade-resistant resin – so if you wish to leave them out year round, you’ll know they’ll be protected. To accent the furniture, we grabbed their indoor/outdoor throw pillows from the Meridian collection. Available in two sizes, these too are weather resistant and water repellent. Their bright coral, fern green, and yellow colors really liven up the space and help give it the contemporary look we were wanting. For a flooring accent we chose Capel Rugs’ Cabana Stripes rug – Black and White are the ultimate combo of modern colors.

Looking up to the walls and ceiling (if you’re lucky enough to have one), we went with our own Barn Light Electric exclusive Machine Age Galvanized Ceiling Fan and the Barn Light Electric Wall Mount Double WGU Sconce with Frost Glass. The galvanized blades add to the contemporary feel and can provide airflow when a summer breeze is not available. If you choose to opt out of the fan’s lighting accessories, consider mounting one or two Wall Mount Double WGU Sconces in a Black or Galvanized finish. The modern – yet retro cage will draw guest’s attention in, and the Frosted Glass option will give your outdoor space a wonderful evening glow.

No space is complete with out accents – we topped off our outdoor room with inexpensive finds like lanterns and colorful modern pottery. A bright orange serving tray can accent your table or can be used to bring out the ice cold lemonade!
