Magazine Overview | This Old House

This Old House is an American home improvement magazine that features short-term remodeling projects for historic houses. The magazine was inspired by the TV series which started in 1979 as a one-time, 13-part series on the Boston PBS station- WGBH. Bob Vila was the original host and the series soon emerged as one of the top rated shows on the network, winning 17 Emmy Awards.

The editorial staff at This Old House magazine includes editor Scott Omelianuk, Amy Hughes, Mark Powers and Keith Pandolfi. Under Omelianuk, This Old House magazine has received numerous awards including a silver Folio Award for Best Redesign and a Henry R. Luce Award citation for Special Interest Story. The Chicago Tribune named This Old House to its 2007 Best Magazines list.

Omelianuk lives in Hoboken, New Jersey, where he and his wife are renovating an 1885 brick-and-brownstone rowhouse. Amy Hughes is the features editor for This Old House. Since joining This Old House in 2001, Amy conceptualized and oversees both the magazine’s and ThisOldHouse.com’s “Salvage” sections. Amy’s devotion extends to her own home, where her salvage projects and techniques have been featured in the magazine, online, and on Apartment Therapy at apartmenttherapy.com.

In addition to “Salvage,” Amy also contributes to the “Green” column, on This Old House – devoted to eco-friendly building techniques and technology, and “Around the House,” a section featuring home-related news stories and tool and product reviews.

Mark Powers is the technical editor who manages the bulk of technical illustrations and instructions that appear throughout the magazine, and is the centerpiece of the popular monthly feature – “Homeowners Handbook.”

Keith Pandolfi is the associate editor of This Old House magazine. Pandolfi covers green building, finance, real estate, and issues related to historic preservation. Before arriving at This Old House in 2005, Pandolfi covered architecture and historic preservation in New Orleans, and also spent time as a music journalist, assistant carpenter, bookstore manager, and drymount press operator.

The Outback Warehouse shade from the Gooseneck Lighting section of Barn Light Electric Co.® was featured in the June 2010 edition of This Old House.
