When we visited the Pink Dog Creative Studios back in a March blog, there was just so much to see and barn lights to admire we couldn’t cover it all in one post. So today, we’re heading back over to Depot Street in Asheville to show you more. The two artists who created this strip of studio space and shops are absolutely not afraid of color. In fact, they embrace every hue and splash it all around to bring life to what once was a litter-strewn avenue of abandoned warehouses.

Today, we peek in the corner where a bold aqua blue meets a smashing pumpkin orange all accented by handsome black barn lights. See any more in the reflection? The warehouse shade on the left is very similar to The Brahma, one of our biggest warehouse shades. At either 24″ or 27″ across, the Brahma offers plenty of light for commercial businesses or workshops. Hand spun right here in America of commercial grade steel, these shades are built to last for years even when installed outside. There’s an old saying that the hardest part of any job is the last 10 percent. Such was the case for Leslie Rudner of Warwick, New York who purchased a home that also featured a terrific outbuilding on the property that Leslie planned to use as a workshop and for extra storage space.

“While the general construction of the building was quite good, final touches like the lighting fixtures were scrimped on,” Leslie explains. And thus began his search to find lights that would not only complete the look of the building but would also be well designed and constructed like the structure itself. Leslie chose the Barn Light Electric Original Gooseneck Warehouse Shade in a 16″ size. For options, Leslie went with a classic black finish and a B-1 gooseneck arm which gives about a 14″ projection from the side of the building.

“I think the warehouse style is a natural for this type of structure,” Leslie says. “There wasn’t much else I considered for the building.” Classic RLM warehouse shades have been dressing up barns and outbuildings since they were first manufactured in this country back in the 1930s and 40s. Farmers loved them for their durability and for the wide pool of light they cast over doorways and farm yards. Goosenecks in particular are desirable because of the endless variety of arms that can position a light exactly where you need it.

If you happen to find yourself in Cleveland, you must check out Hodges, a new restaurant owned by food truck pioneer Chris Hodgson whom you may have seen in his entertaining run on The Great Food Truck Race. Along with restauranteur Scott Kuhn, Hodgson has fulfilled his dream of owning a brick-and-mortar restaurant. Located in downtown Cleveland, Hodge’s integrates an upscale approach with the food truck style cuisine Chris introduced to Cleveland two years ago. The new eatery features a 4,400-square-foot interior with a simple decor of wood, red leather, and rustic lighting.

“We wanted something kind of industrial, kind of vintage,” explains Scott who led the design team for the new space. Faced with soaring ceilings within the restaurant, Scott chose rustic chandeliers, very much like our Industrial 6-Light Chandelier The Factory Overhead, to fill the cavernous space.

When we turned the corner into 2012, we promised that this year would be full of new and exciting things from Barn Light Electric! Today, we are proud to launch our newest line of classic American made lighting in our New England Barn Light Collection. This line of fixtures are Colonial-era reproductions of lights that were used in the early 1800s. Two of our favorites are onion lanterns which were often found aboard fishing schooners and put into service as nighttime working lights. The design was popular because it was virtually unbreakable and the flame was protected from the wind and rain. The Yarmouth Orb Lantern and the Marblehead Brass Lantern both honor the days of oil-lit lamps with their functionality and timeless beauty. The Yarmouth Orb comes in a 12″ size with clear or optic glass which mimics pumpkin ridges. The Marblehead comes in four sizes ranging from 8″ to 12″ and offers the same glass options as the Yarmouth Orb. Five traditional brass finishes are available.

Two more classic colonial fixtures are the Barnstable Carriage Lantern and the Hyannis Barn Light. A daunting and ugly project sat ahead for Raina & Robert when they ventured into remodeling this to-be rental property. Seen on Apartment Therapy, most overlooked the run down, old farmhouse. However, over a 15-month renovation period, this designer and architect pair brought out the character of this diamond in the rough. Throughout the home, vintage flea market finds paired with Ikea hacks blend harmoniously with the lovely old bones.

The occasional pop of color is seen throughout the home, from the rich blue wall in the entry way to a bright rug in the living room. However, the kitchen is mostly white with the touches of rich, timeworn wood. Typical industrial farmhouse, right? The trick is spotted over the island seen in the brightly hued pendant lights. With the style of our Deep Bowl Pendants, you can achieve this look in your kitchen as well. Bright, sunshine yellow shades bring the room to life, no matter if the windows are letting in natural light or not.

Different in almost every way, shape, and form from the old chipped fixtures, our Deep Bowl Pendant Light comes in a variety of sizes and finishes. If bright yellow is too much for your space, neutral shades like galvanized and bronze also are a great look on this light.
