Studies have shown that a well-designed office space is one of the most cost-effective ways to increase worker productivity. When the good folks at Hattery, an ideas and innovation lab in San Francisco, decided their space needed more flexibility for their fast-paced environment, they turned to Celsa Dockstader, their Studio Design Coordinator to spearhead the changes. We spoke with Celsa about how her choice of barn pendant lighting played into the overall design.

Q: Was this a new space or a remodel?
A: Before this was a workspace for the Hattery team, it was a crossfit gym — dark and uninviting, painted concrete everywhere, and signatures of accomplished lifters scrawled on the walls.

Q: What was your design direction for this space?
A: I worked closely with Architect Wayne Leong as well as the partners and team at Hattery to create a beautiful, flexible space that can be reinvented daily. We wanted to provide a wide range of spaces that inspire and facilitate many modes of creative work.

Q: How important was the lighting for the space? Were you more concerned with functionality or aesthetics?
A: Lighting the space was one of the most effective ways we gave new life to the space. It was originally very dark and cold, so we repainted the beige ceiling a fresh white to reflect light from existing fixtures, raised the lights close to the ceiling, and then used beautiful warehouse lights for aesthetic focus in meeting rooms.

Q: Why did you choose this style of lighting?
A: We chose these fixtures from Barn Light Electric because the products are manufactured in the United States and the company aligns with our commitment to craft, quality, and simple industrial style. We used 17” Old Dixie Cord Hung Pendants in Barn Red in our four small meeting rooms to give colorful focal points against the sandblasted concrete back walls. In our big conference room, we have three 24” Textured Black Original™ Warehouse Pendants. Their simplicity and size provide balance to this space with the tall ceilings and extra-long table.

Q: What does your team like best about the new lights?
A: They are the perfect fusion of old barn light aesthetic and new manufacturing. Everyone loves the classic red finish!

In the shadow of Mount Mansfield, in the town of Underhill, Vermont, our Featured Customer Martine envisioned a warm, country feel for her bathroom remodel. It would also include her heart’s desire — a claw foot tub.

“We are surrounded by nature and I wanted a farmhouse type feel,” Martine says. “I felt it was important to have a light that was custom and unique to be the center of attention.” Martine selected a 10″ Bantam Laramie Wall Sconce which is a popular fixture in our Barn Wall Sconces collection. She chose a Bronze finish for the fixture which is mounted above the rough-hewn vanity which was, as Martine says, “crafted by my honey who is a carpenter.”

“I was going for a look that was both country and natural but also incorporated a warm, metal touch,” she adds. “I wanted something that you couldn’t get at your local Home Depot; something you wouldn’t find in most people’s homes.” The Bronze finish complements the oil rubbed bathtub fixtures Martine chose for her claw foot tub. She had always wanted a freestanding tub and designed the bathroom around it. This cozy space serves as her own special place to get away and relax.

The Bantam Laramie is a smaller version of the Laramie Wall Sconce making it an excellent choice for baths, hallways, and reading nooks. This American made fixture is crafted by our own metal spinners and can be finished in one of 15 durable and brilliant colors.

Martine spent many hours online looking at lighting styles to find the perfect fixture for her space. While she used Houzz, the website and online community that features hundreds of thousands of interior design photos, she notes that, in the end, Google Images helped her the most.

“With the sconce above the concrete vessel sink and the reclaimed wood vanity that my honey made, it all just fits so well together and looks like it’s been there forever,” Martine says. “All around the light provides this soft and warm glow. I love it!”

The not-so-secret recipe for the amazing food you’ll find at any Bareburger restaurant in New York is listed right on their website. Organic, grass-fed, all natural, and sustainable are just a few of the words they use to describe the fare they create every day with the help of local farmers. And the founders take just as much care when it comes to designing their restaurant spaces using recycled, reclaimed, and sustainable materials. Two new locations feature one of our favorite upcycled lighting fixtures — The Mig Retro Steel Industrial Pendant.

“At Bareburger, we focus on organic and sustainable comfort food, and have committed to building and designing our restaurants sustainably as well,” says Bareburger co-founder Jonn Simeonidis, Jr. “The Mig Pendants fit in very well with our overall design aesthetic which focuses on recycled, reclaimed, and re-used materials.” The Mig Pendants are crafted from steel acetylene tank tops — an item many restaurants use behind the counter. Simeonidis thought it would be interesting to take this element out of the back and feature it in the main dining space.

The Migs have been installed at two of the newest Bareburger locations — on Cobble Hill in Brooklyn and in Great Neck, Long Island. The designers chose a rainbow of Mig colors to install including Blue, Burnt Orange, Grey, Jadite, Red, and Yellow.

“I really like the color that the lamps lend to the front of the house,” Simeonidis says. “We use a lot of wood throughout the restaurant and the colors of the lights provide a very nice contrast against all the wood. The wood and metal items are well-worn but also well-loved.” The Migs come in nine different colors and can be hung with a standard cord or a cotton twist cord to add a bit more color and vintage flavor. They add the perfect touch of warm light to this comfortable and inviting space.

“We wanted to create a comfy and almost rustic feel,” Simeonidis notes. “A place where our guests can relax and simply enjoy a great meal and great company.”

Mint green and peach are Spring '13 color essentials. It's no surprise we find these pastel hues in some of our favorite frozen treats like mint chocolate ice cream and peach sorbet.

Charles Baxter wittily noted, “Forget art. Put your trust in ice cream.” We couldn’t agree more! There’s little more refreshing and comforting than a chilly bowl of ice cream on a warm spring afternoon. With the summer heat wave on the cusp (well, at least for us Floridians!) the very thought of ice cream makes our mouths water. So, why not decorate with fresh home decor that remind us of one of our favorite desserts?

Mint green and peach are Spring ’13 color essentials. From wall finishes to flouncy skirts, you can’t go wrong. It’s no surprise we find these pastel hues in some of our favorite frozen treats like mint chocolate ice cream and peach sorbet.

1. & 2. Minty fresh jadite anyone? Our beautiful porcelain finish was inspired by vintage jadite housewares. How do you like yours? Perhaps the Ivanhoe™ Dominion Porcelain Pendant is what you need to light up your soda shop counter top. Perhaps you’re in need a compact wall light like the Wheeler™ Esso Wall Sconce to help illuminate your bedside while you dive into your favorite book and a milkshake. The great thing about mint is that we love it year round!

3. I’ll let you in on a little secret… The Ice Cream Cone Clock is my favorite fixture from our Vintage Timekeeping Collection. Its nostalgic design eludes to old wooden shop signs and its little red dials are the cherry on top!

4. Practical and charming, these Peach Paper Straws from saralukecreative are perfect for accessorizing your celebrations. Who wouldn’t want to guzzle down a root beer float with some retro straws? Especially ones that are biodegradable!

5. Have you ever eaten cereal from a porcelain enamel bowl? Our Build-Your-Own-Graniteware collection is for the nostalgia lovers who enjoy their ice cream in vintage enamel bowls. Plus, the jadite and black speckled finish resembles delicious chocolate mint ice cream.

6. Etsian illustrator Meuadoraveliglu captured our hearts with her playful Ice Cream Man wall decal. It reminds us of an innocent time: when the sound of the ice cream truck had us bolting to the windows and begging our mom for some cash.

We style our sundaes with cherries and sprinkles… It’s about time we add a little sweetness to our home decor!

With the 2013 Kentucky Derby in the books and the Preakness set for this weekend, even casual observers of horse racing are getting excited about the annual Triple Crown hype. Few, however, consider what happens after a thoroughbred finishes a racing career. Luckily, people like today’s Featured Customer make it their life’s work to help these horses find new homes when they are no longer able to race. Allie recently completed the construction of a new barn in the heart of North Carolina’s horse country.

“This is a barn for my own horses as well as those belonging to my non profit CANTER Mid-Atlantic,” Allie explains. “We rescue, rehabilitate, and re-home thoroughbreds so they are not sent to slaughter at the end of their racing careers.” When it came time to choose lighting for the new building, Allie wanted lights reminiscent of the barns of yesteryear.

“I knew I wanted gooseneck lighting and a search on Houzz led me to Barn Light Electric,” she says. “I comparison shopped but returned to BLE again and again because the lights are American made, the website is easy to use and understand, and I felt the prices were great for the quality. My electrician told me they were the best quality lights he’d ever installed!”

On the exterior, at each end of the building, Allie chose the 18″ Original™ Warehouse Gooseneck Light in a Barn Red finish. She selected the G22 gooseneck arm for these yard lights.

“I wanted a pop of color somewhere and I knew just where it was coming from,” Allie says. “My beautiful yard lights! The lights are Barn Red and look fabulous!” Over the Dutch doors, Allie wanted something small, simple, and pretty. She chose seven Arlington Sconces with a compact 8″ shade and a Black finish to light up each doorway.

“These were mounted high enough to be out of reach of interested horses and have a simple beauty about them,” Allie notes. “They sit beautifully against the hardie-board siding and will complement the black metal-framed Dutch doors once they’re installed.” Allie’s one splurge in her shopping was the four Ashland Gooseneck Lights for the interior of the space. They remind her that while she is facing a milestone birthday soon, she still adores silly things regardless of whether they match or not.

“I thought the blue was so beautiful and I knew I would look at them and smile for years to come,” Allie says. “So they are a bit silly, but they have the exact look I wanted. Everybody comes in the barn and that is the first thing they notice — the awesome lights!”
