When we last visited Carrie, author of the blog Hazardous Design, she and her husband were busy pushing their late 1800s-era home into the 21st century one space at a time. That post described the garage makeover which included some fresh paint and one of our All Weather Gooseneck Farm Lights.
Today we return to the home where Carrie has been focusing her latest efforts on the front entryway. As with many renovations in an older home, the first steps included removing dated materials. In Carrie’s case, this meant steaming away a busy vinyl wallpaper and stripping the staircase down to bare wood. With a relatively clean palette, the couple repainted the ceiling and walls, stained the stairs “dark, dark, dark” as Carrie says, and cut picture molding to add interest and texture to walls.

If your bathroom still has its mid-century porcelain fixtures—especially if they are powdery pink!—it might be time for an upgrade! While we find this little feminine lavatory charming, its look is quite dated. We were, however, inspired by its details and palette and decided to perform our own imaginary remodel.

Everyone knows the phrase, “Never judge a book by its cover.” This time of the year, many home’s curb appeal is lacking due to piles of snow and ice. In turn, this is precisely the best time to work on the interior of your home so that you can make a strong impression with visitors rushing in to escape the cold.
Creating an inviting entryway is far from difficult. A console table is a must for dropping keys on and displaying family photos or memories. Here, a few glass candlesticks add a touch of timeless elegance too. The occasional chairs that flank the console table offer a classy place to take off winter boots or to drop off those heavy coats. Don’t forget to add some sort of art as well – this can give your guests a great sense of who you are. From department stores to online art galleries, prints of your favorite work are available everywhere, so if you can’t afford an original just yet, there should always an affordable alternative.

Builder-basic homes – that’s what we like to call them anyway. You know, the string of homes scattered about a new subdivision in town? They’re built quickly and are perfect for young couples or new families wanting that new home feel without breaking their budget or having to undergo major renovations, but there can sometimes be one downfall: the lack of personalization. Sure, some construction companies do let you customize certain elements like hardware and appliances, but in the end, it’s not really a home until you can make it your own.
